Singapore’s leading English daily, The Straits Times, will no longer run a free website. It will charge a subscription fee. The newspaper which sells for 80 Singapore cents on the news stands and sells 390,000 copies a day, according to the Sunday Star, will be available online only to subscribers paying 12 Singapore dollars a month. Actually, it will be cheaper online than the print version. And Singapore has plenty of Internet subscribers who could take this option. The Malaysian newspaper, Sunday Star, speculated on the possible reasons for this move. I just read the article on the Singapore website, Little Speck.
