I just noted in my previous post that Singapore now tops the tech economy table. But please note where I got the information from — the Guardian and the BBC. I am writing from Singapore but looking for information from the Western media.
One may talk of the rise of Asia but Asians still look to the West. It makes business sense, of course. Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong and now China and India are where they are today because of trade with the West. We would not have prospered without the Western markets. The Asian electronic giants as well as the multinational plants in the region turn out products very much with the Western consumers in mind. They have to satisfy Western customers and so the Western cultural influence continues in Asia.
Not that I would have it any other way. I love Singapore and India but I cannot do without the BBC and the Guardian. I love whodunits and rock ‘n’ roll, Fern Hill and The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock are among my favourite poems, PG Wodehouse is one of my favourite authors. And there are plenty of Asians like me.
