Bloggies

The Bloggies are coming up again. A Google search just took me to the Bloggies page which showed preparations are on for the Sixth Annual Weblog Awards. The site said anyone can nominate their favourite weblogs till Jan 10 after which three panels of 50 voters will receive an email. It will list the weblogs that have received the most nominations in 10 categories from which they will choose their favourites by Jan 17.

The finalists will be announced on Jan 20, when voting will open to choose the winners. Voting will close on Jan 31 and the winners announced in mid-March.

The Bloggies are big. They made headlines around the world last year. I remember reading about them on Google News and the BBC web site. Boing Boing won the Weblog of the Year award for the past two years. There were also awards for Movable Type, Flickr, Dooce, Defamer, Gizmodo, Slashdot, Wonkette, Plastic Bag and Singapore’s Xiaxue.

Bloggies

Had a look at the Bloggies and was delighted to see Bookslut among the contenders. The South-east Asia Earthquake and Tsunami Blog has been a remarkable example of course of how bloggers can be an invaluable source of news and information. But what really struck me was that out of the five finalists for the Best Asian Blog, two are from Singapore: Life in Mono, written by university student Adrianna Tan, and Xiaxue, by another Singapore girl, Wendy Cheng. She brags, "I am just goddamn beautiful ", and it isn’t an empty boast, looking at the pictures she has plastered all over her blog.
