President’s Scholars: Their schools and choices

Looking at the list of President’s Scholars announced today, it was good to see one of the five will be reading global affairs and another, either political science or psychology. Not everyone is opting for the hard sciences. In fact, going by the list of recent President’s Scholars, the majority prefer the soft sciences. Here’s the list of President’s Scholars since 2002.

The names of this year’s scholars are taken from the Straits Times, last year’s from Today and the rest from data.gov.sg. If you look at the list, it is  dominated by Raffles Institution with a few names here and there from Nanyang Girls, Hwa Chong Institution, Raffles Girls, Chinese High, Anglo-Chinese (Independent), Dunman High and a couple of other schools. Almost all the scholars are Chinese. Among the favourite subjects are economics, politics, law and medicine. The preferred universities include Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Yale, UPenn and Stanford. Only one chose a foreign university outside America or Britain.
