He was referring to the fa…KOLKATA, India (AP) – U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton urged energy-starved India on Monday to reduce its Iranian oil imports to keep up pressure on the Islamic republic to come clean about its nuclear program.Clinton told a town hall meeting in the eastern city of Kolkata that there’s an adequate supply in the market for India to find alternative sources of oil. The state secretariat, which will witness the first-ever visit by a key figure in the US administration since it was built in 1776, today was a scene of hectic official activities rarely seen on a Sunday during its long chequered history. For the 30-year-old wage earner, engaged by the PWD to paint the wooden handle of the staircase, it was a "unique" experience as never before had he been forced to come armed with his voter’s identity card to do his work. "We have been asked to bring the card, along with photocopies, by the contractor for security check. I don’t know who is the VVIP for whom the sprucing up is being done. I am happy to get my wage," he said while vigorously polishing the wooden bar. Chief secretary Samar Ghosh held a series of meetings with senior officials throughout the day while a minister and the police commissioner personally supervised the final touches being given to the state secretariat. Mr Ghosh was closeted with the home secretary, secretary of information and cultural affairs department and the secretary of the PWD to fine tune the preparations. PWD minister Sudarshan Ghosh Dastidar and police commissioner RK Pachnanda inspected several corners of Writers’ Buildings. Air surveillance started since the arrival of Mrs Clinton in the city. The wooden fencing outside the state secretariat is being been replaced by an iron fencing. Truck-loads of iron fencing were brought to be put up throughout the night. Supervisor B Pal, who has been working for years in Writers’ Buildings, said this was the first time that he got involved with such US VVIP visit on the corridors of state power. In fact, for the past 34 years such a visit was unthinkable because of the Marxists’ allergy to the USA. There was a time when former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and his comrades even refused to drink a famous brand of US soft drink, while he had made a derogatory remark on a former US ambassador to India during his tenure as chief minister. Three floor cleaner machines, each worth Rs 3.50 lakh, have been brought from Delhi to clean the floor near the chief minister’s chamber, conference room and the chief minister’s ante-chamber.
