Obama reaches climate deal with China, India

Obama reaches climate deal with China, India and South Africa, reports Reuters, quoting a US official.

No country was "entirely satisfied" with the deal, but it was a "historic step forward," the official added, says the BBC.

The deal was not enough to fully tackle climate change in the future, but was an important first step, the official said.

The two-week summit in Copenhagen had been deadlocked on Friday evening as world leaders tried to hammer out a deal.

The New York Times says:

The accord
drops the expected goal of concluding a binding international treaty by
the end of 2010, which leaves the implementation of its provisions
uncertain. It is likely to undergo many months, perhaps years, of
additional negotiation before it emerges in any internationally
enforceable form.
