China seeks closer security ties with Singapore

Chinese President Hu Jintao suggested Singapore and China should step up defence and security cooperation when he met Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, reports Xinhua.

The report, which appeared in China's Global Times, says:

Hu proposed that the two sides should carry out cooperation in non-traditional security areas, including humanitarian assistance, maritime rescue, safeguarding security in the Malacca Straits and anti-terrorism.

It was part of his six-point proposal, according to the report. The six points are:

Firstly, the two countries should maintain the momentum of frequent high-level contact.

Secondly, the two countries should give full play to bilateral cooperation mechanism.

Thirdly, China and Singapore should deepen economic and trade cooperation.

Fourthly, the two countries should expand cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

Fifthly, the two sides should step up defense and security cooperation.

And last, the two countries should promote multilateral cooperation.

The China Daily also reports President Hu proposes security co-op with Singapore. It says:

"We hope the two sides would strengthen exchange, upgrade cooperation level, and vigorously conduct collaboration in humanitarian relief, joint marine search and rescue operations, and in fighting terrorism and securing the safety of passage through the Malacca Straits," Hu told Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Here are the reports which appeared in Channel NewsAsia and AsiaOne.
