Apec 2009: 10,000 guests, 1,800 journos, 17,000 personnel, $71.8m budget

Here's what Singapore had to do to host the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit, neatly summed up by the Chinese news agency, Xinhua.

Around 10,000 delegates, media persons and visitors, including 21 leaders and 63 ministers from the 21 APEC member economies are coming to the APEC Leaders' Week meetings. Another 5,700 delegates have attended the various APEC meetings held thus far.

Some 1,800 foreign and local reporters have been accredited to cover the event. Around 1,700 volunteers were chosen out of 3,000 applicants to play host to the meetings, for whom 11,451 hours of training were provided.

During APEC Singapore 2009, 123 events were held over 62 meeting days, which comprised 80 meetings and 43 dialogues, seminars and workshops. About 700 officers from 40 government agencies in Singapore were involved, looking into areas such as the physical arrangements for the various meetings, as well as other logistical arrangements including transportation, security, hospitality, medical and media coverage arrangements.

And 17,400 personnel from 330 Singapore and Singapore-based companies were involved in the physical set-up of the various meeting venues, provision of various services for the meetings as well as the design of furniture and the attire for staff.

Some 130 hours of rehearsal time were arranged by the organizing committee in Singapore, including airport pickup, convoy proceedings and photo op.

Singapore has set aside a budget of 100 million Singapore dollars ($71.8 million) for the year's event.
