Elvis Presley passed away on this day 31 years ago, on August 16, 1977. He was only 42. Here is Elvis singing one of my favourite songs, One Night, in an informal session in 1968, backed by guitarist Scotty Moore and drummer DJ Fontana. This song may not be as well known as Are You Lonesome Tonight, It's Now Or Never, Surrender, Blue Suede Shoes or Jailhouse Rock. Still, One Night topped the UK chart when reissued in 2005. It's impossible not to be moved by the raw power and passion in his voice. Check YouTube for more Elvis videoclips from this 1968 session. He looks and sounds great. Long live the King.
Elvis looks so relaxed in this video. He recovers beautifully after he has to break off in the middle of the song. "Someone pulled the plug," he says and, getting his guitar back in order, continues to sing like nothing happened. Here are the lyrics:
One night with you
Is what Im now praying for
The things that we two could plan
Would make my dreams come true
Just call my name
And I'll be right by your side
I want your sweet helping hand
My loves too strong to hide
Always lived, very quiet life
I ain't never did no wrong
Now I know that life without you
Has been too lonely too long
One night with you
Is what I'm now praying for
The things that we two could plan
Would make my dreams come true
Always lived, very quiet life
I ain't never did no wrong
Now I know that life without you
Has been too lonely too long
One night with you
Is what I'm now praying for
The things that we two could plan
Would make my dreams come true
