At the beck and call of my son and my wife

My son refused to chat online with me this morning. We usually do ever since he returned to his college in America early this month to take up a summer job on campus.

But he will chat with me only "after 24 hours", he said last night. So I will have to wait till about midnight to speak to him on the Internet Messenger. That will be around noon for him. There’s almost a 12-hour difference between Singapore and the East Coast.

I see his point. He doesn’t have to work today, so he would like to get up late.

I enjoyed the luxury of lolling in bed till late this morning myself. I didn’t have to get up to turn on the PC to chat with my son or reach for the phone.

My wife in Calcutta (Kolkata) asked me not to call her early today when my son said he wouldn’t be coming online this morning. She was talking with him on the phone, which I held close to the computer speaker, as I chatted with him on the Internet Messenger. She said she would like to get up late this morning as she had a tiring day yesterday.

Of course, her maternal instinct would have roused her bright and early if our son came online in the morning.

But wake up early to take a call from the hubby? Hah! Newly-weds may do that. But when you have been married for 20 years or more, that call can wait. You know if you have been stuck with him that long, neither of you are going anywhere. So why not get some sleep and rest? You will still be there for each other when you wake up refreshed.

My wife could claim it’s for our own good that she asked me not to call her this morning. It cuts down our phone bills.
